Newscast Media WASHINGTON—The United States Senate on Wednesday approved a budget measure authored by Paul Ryan which was designed to avert another government shutdown by 64-36 votes. The same measure was signed in the House of Representatives last week, and will now be sent to Barack Obama for his signature.

"It is our hope that Republicans, in the House in particular, will see the wisdom in getting things done that the American people would like to see done — getting things done that, like the budget agreement, help the economy grow, help the middle class," White House spokesperson Jay Carney said.

The plans sets the discretionary spending for the years 2014-2015 at 520.5 billion dollars for defense and 491.8 billion dollars for non-defense spending.

The deal's negotiators, House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., and Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray, D-Wash., said they are hopeful this final act of bipartisanship will usher in a new era of cooperation in a divided Washington.
