With Iowa out of the way, New Hampshire primary next
by Joseph Earnest February 2, 2016
Newscast Media DES MOINES—As candidates assess the Iowa results, the next state to brace for being in the spotlight will be New Hampshire, when the primary is held on Tuesday February, 9.
Leading the GOP pack in Iowa was Texas Senator Ted Cruz who received 27 percent of the vote, followed by Trump who garnered 24 percent, with Marco Rubio close behind with an impressive 23 percent. Ted Cruz seems to have picked up voters from former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who complained that Cruz had sent out disiniformation that Carson had dropped out of the race yesterday.
"I was reasonably happy today, until I, you know, discovered the dirty tricks going on — spreading rumors I had dropped out," NBC quoted Carson.
After finishing in second place, Donald Trump said he was happy with the results because many doubted he could make the top ten in Iowa when he first announced his intention to run for president. Trump graciously conceded and congratulated Cruz on his win. "They said don't go to Iowa, and I said I have to do it, and we finished second. And I want to tell you something, I'm just honored. And I want to congratulate Ted, and I want to congratulate all of the incredible candidates, including Mike Huckabee, who has become a really good friend of mine," Trump told his audience. Below are the results:
As for the Democrats, Bernie Sanders gave Hillary Clinton the run for her money, and declared the race a virtual tie. "It looks like we are in a virtual tie," Sanders said to a cheering audience. "I think the people of Iowa have sent a very profound message to the political establishment, to the economic establishment — and, by the way, to the media establishment." Republican candidate Mike Huckabee has since suspended his campaign after a poor performance in Iowa. Add Comments>>
