CDC study shows prescription drug overdose on the rise

Newscast Media BEVERLY HILLS, CA -- According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and reported by Bloomberg, the death rate of overdoses from prescription drugs partucularly in Florida have more than doubled in the past ten years. Dr. Michael Lowenstein, who specializes in the Waismann Method, an advanced procedure for rapid opiate detoxification, indicates that according to surveys conducted of admitted patients, the fear of symptoms of withdrawal is a common cause of overdose, as patients continue to increase drug intake to avoid pain and distress.
"One of the greatest worries associated with recovery is the withdrawal process, which can cause a high degree of unbearable discomfort," said Dr. Lowenstein. "People suffering from dependencies want to avoid that experience at all cost, so they’ll defer seeking treatment and continue to increase consumption of the addictive substances in order to feel 'normal.' In addition, they often try to compensate for the feelings of withdrawal by taking too much, which can result in overdose. By making the detoxification process humane and comfortable, many people will conquer their fears of seeking treatment for dependency."
According to this released CDC report, the prescription drug with the greatest increase in overdose deaths was oxycodone, followed by alprazolam and methadone. The report analyzed 34 types of drugs frequently abused and included data from 2003 to 2009. Researchers found a 61 percent increase in the annual number of deaths due to drug overdose in Florida.
