End Game Unfolds: Egypt's Final Cut Is In Motion
by Joseph Ernest February4, 2011
Newscast Media CAIRO, Egypt--As the world waits in anticipation of Mubarak's impending exit, authorities at Cairo Airport report that incoming flights are carrying media figures of different nationalities who are flooding in to cover the country's current political crisis. Arriving press corps have been provided with all required necessities for their coverage on the unfolding events, the authorities said.
After protesters called for a march to the palace, army units joined presidential guard units surrounding the palace and nearby streets. Armed forces are currently stationed at the entries and exits of main streets surrounding the palace, and more barbed wire has also been installed around an extended perimeter.
On Thursday night White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said: "The president has said that now is the time to begin a peaceful, orderly and meaningful transition, with credible, inclusive negotiations. We have discussed with the Egyptians a variety of different ways to move that process forward, but all of those decisions must be made by the Egyptian people."
Thousands of Coptic Christians have also joined the protests from several districts of Cairo, including Shubra, Ain Shams, Mattariya, Al-Zaher and Old Cairo. In other developments, newly-appointed Health Minister Ahmed Fareed said that the total number of injuries recorded during Friday's "Day of Departure" protests stood at 28 as of Friday evening. The minister added that the total number of injured to have been treated at hospitals since Wednesday stood at 1134. Of these, 111 remain hospitalized. Related articles:
