Google reinvents wireless technology--launches Google Fi
by Joseph Earnest April 24, 2015
Newscast Media SAN JOSE—Google has entered the telecom business by launching a cost-effective service in which the consumer can talk, text, use Wi-Fi tethering in more than 120 countries for only $20 a month. Google will only charge for data used and will even give a refund for unused data.
Partnering with Spring and T-Mobile, the undertaking that is referred to as "Project Fi", intelligently connects between the two networks to give the consumer the best and fastest network available, which might be a Wi-Fi hotspot or a specific 4G LTE network.
Project Fi automatically connects the user to more than a million free, open Wi-Fi hotspots it's verified as fast and reliable. Once the user is connected, Google helps secure the user's data through encryption. When not on Wi-Fi, it moves the user between whichever of its partner networks is delivering the fastest speed, so one gets 4G LTE in more places.
Wherever one is connected to Wi-Fi—whether that's at home, one's favorite coffee shop or basement—the user can talk and text like he or she normally does. If the user leaves an area of Wi-Fi coverage, the call will seamlessly transition from Wi-Fi to cell networks so the conversation is not interrupted. With Project Fi, the user's phone number lives in a cloud, so one can talk and text with one's number on just about any phone, tablet or laptop as shown here. (pop-up) While Google Fi uses Wi-Fi hotspots, Sprint and T-Mobile networks for connectivity, the service will intially work with the Nexus 6 phones. It remains to be seen whether the technology will accommodate other phone brands, should Project Fi become popular. The service is currently offered within the U.S. only. Add Comments>>
