Google provides Egyptians with Twitter access using new technology
by Joseph Ernest February 1, 2011
Newscast Media HOUSTON, TX-- Google has found a way to bypass the Internet blackout in Egypt by providing a service where they can dial a number and tweet using voice connection.
"Like many people we've been glued to the news unfolding in Egypt and
thinking of what we could do to help people on the ground. Over the
weekend we came up with the idea of a speak-to-tweet service -- the ability
for anyone to tweet using just a voice connection," read a statement on
their corporate blog.
Google, whose corporate motto is "Don't Be Evil," helping Egyptians and other users across the globe transmit information as it has done with other services such as video website YouTube. Google says anyone across the world can tweet by simply leaving a voicemail on one of these international phone numbers: +16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855.
Google then attaches a hashtag for that country to each tweet. For example, if a call comes from Switzerland, you'll see #switzerland in the tweet, and if one comes from Egypt you'll see #egypt, from Kenya it would be #kenya and so forth. For calls when Google can't detect the location, Google defaults to an #egypt hashtag. Tweets that are called in using one of the numbers above, can then be accessed by the outside world at twitter.com/speak2tweet. Source: Google official blog Add Comments>>
