Newscast Media HOUSTONMany parts of Deep South Texas saw their first accumulating snow since Christmas 2004. The Weather Channel predicted a bizarre, first-in-over-a decade snow that would blanket parts of southern Texas late Thursday into Friday as Winter Storm Benji spread its wintry snow across much of the Deep South.

Just outside of Brownsville, about an inch of snow was measured in Edinburg. That's unusual enough. What was more interesting: Three days earlierm they had the nation's hottest temperature, just shy of 90 degrees.

Just to the north, thundersnow was reported in Raymondville on Friday morning, with snowfall rates around 1 inch per hour.

As for Houston, NBC's affiliate station reports that the last snow to hit the city was on Feb. 23, 2010, when a trace of snow fell.

Going back two decades, there have been only five snowfall events in Houston, and only three of those measured more than a trace.

Newscast Media captured some Houston neighborhoods covered with snow as shown in the pictures below:

Luckily, Houstonians didn't have to worry about black ice on the streets, which is perhaps the most dangerous aspect of snow and causes numerous accidents, when vehicles try to brake and end up skidding or spinning. Photo by Joseph Earnest

Research from the National Weather Service also reveals that on December 4, 2009, the southern part of Southeast Texas experienced one of its earliest snow events. The city of Houston recorded an inch of snow. This was the first time the city of Houston recorded accumulating snow in consecutive years (2008 and 2009). Photo by Joseph Earnest
