Newscast Media SAN DIEGO, Calif.Russian news agency Russia Today (RT) was among the first to break news that filmmaker Jason Russell, the maker of the controversial documentary Kony 2012 has been detained by police for masturbating publicly. San Diego Police Department Lieutenant Andrea Brown told a local NBC affiliate that Russell was found masturbating in public, vandalizing cars and possibly under the influence of an unknown substance at around 11:30 am on Thursday. He was reportedly pinned down to the ground by several bystanders until the cops arrived.  The entire act was caught on video of a fully-naked Russell indulging himself in broad daylight.

Because of his inaccurate portrayal of Kony, Jason Russell's movie has been criticized by virtually every Ugandan who has watched it, even in the Acholi region from where Kony hails, because it creates a problem where none exists.  Kony has been inactive since 2006, and is in neither Uganda nor the Central African Republic.

The Central African Republic is the country between Sudan, Chad and Cameroon

*(It is different from Uganda that is located in East Africa next to Kenya)

Jason Russell obviously suffers from a condition whereby he has the urge to defile himself in public. It will not be surprising if the Ugandan government investigates whether Russell committed the same kind of behavior around the children in Uganda whom he worked with while in the East African country. Such sexual deviation in Psychology is referred to as a paraphilia.

A paraphilia is a sexual deviation in which the person has either acted on or has recurrent urges and fantasies involving unsuspecting people or non-human objects. The paraphilias below involve unsuspecting people:

(i) Exhibitionism: Is characterised by exposing one's genitalia to a stranger, often with the intent of shocking the unsuspecting victim.  Some take it as far as masturbating in public to make the shock more extreme.

(ii) Voyeurism: Comprises urges, acts or fantasies of observing an unsuspecting person disrobing or engaging in a sexual activity. (Also called "Peeping Tom"). Sexual contact is not the goal.  Viewing the undressed body is the primary motive.

(iii)Frotteurism: Involves recurrent and intense sexual urges or acts of inappropriately touching or rubbing against a non-consenting person.  Unlike voyeurism where physical contact is not the goal, frotteurism requires contact. The act of "dry humping" also falls in this category.  (Many travelers say they feel sexually violated at the TSA airport checkpoints after being groped around the gluts, chest area, and mid-section area).

(iv) Sadism (the giver): This is where an individual receives sexual gratification by inflicting physical pain upon others.  (Sadists love to punish others).

(v) Masochism (the receiver):  This is where an individual receives sexual gratification by being humiliated, bound, or made to suffer. (spanking, whipping and bondage).

A clear example is in the popular comedy from the 90s called In Living Color, where one of the male characters gets in trouble and when caught jokes: "Slap me around and call me Susan!"  (Masochists enjoy being punished).

The second category involves non-human objects:

(vi) Fetishism: Comprises an extremely strong sexual attraction to and fantasies involving inanimate objects such as female undergarments.  The fetish is often used as a sexual stimulus.

(vii) Transvestic Fetishism: An intense sexual arousal obtained through cross-dressing.  This should not be confused with "transsexualism" which is a gender identity disorder in which one identifies with the opposite gender.

Treatment:

Psychodynamic treatment and structured behavioral exercise are effective for these sexual deviations. In psychodynamic treatment all sexual deviations represent unconscious conflicts that begin in early childhood. The treatment involves helping the patient understand the relationship between the deviation and the unconscious conflict that produced it.  The methods of "free association" and "dream analysis" can be applied to eliminate the deviation.
