Haley wins S.C. GOP nomination for governor Joseph Ernest June 22, 2010 Newscast Media -- Despite the negative campaigning she faced from her opponents, State Rep. Nikki Haley won the GOP nomination for governor in South Carolina. Should she win the governorship, she will be the first female governor of the state.
Tim Scott, a minority like Haley, also won his race becoming the first black Republican congressman in over a century. Scott and Haley were both endorsed by Sarah Palin, and the Tea Party movement.
Haley was able to endure the vicious attacks and racial slurs because of her Indian Sikh origins despite her conversion to Christianity. There were also allegations of infidelity which she vehemently denied, and was able able to transcend.
"It's a new day in our state, and I am very blessed to be a part of it," remarked Haley during her victory speech. Michael Steele, the Republican National Committee Chairman released a statement declaring the times as "exciting" for the GOP. Haley will face Vincent Sheheen (D) in the general election.
