Hillary Clinton at G8 meeting to discuss the Libyan conflict
by Joseph Ernest March 14, 2011
Newscast Media PARIS, France-- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Paris joining the discussion of key industrialized nations known as the G8. Clinton is also due to hold talks with representatives of the Libyan opposition council in Paris. She is scheduled to meet with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and other European officials. Last week French President Nicolas Sarkozy was the first European leader to recognize the legitimacy of the anti-Gadhafi rebels, who have claimed Benghazi as their capital in the eastern part of Libya. Reports from Libya indicate that Gadhafi's forces have gained some ground and successfully recaptured some of the lost cities. However, this might soon change since Britain and France have a draft resolution in hand for the UN Security Council to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya. Rebels believe that Gadhafi is using as much fire power as he can just in case a no-fly zone is enforced, he would have control of most cities. Experts say the no-fly zone may be too late since Gadhafi is building on the momentum to neutralize rebel forces. The United States is participating in planning for a no-fly zone, but has expressed doubts about the effectiveness of such a measure, and wants a clear legal mandate before taking action. British Foreign Secretary William Hague told the BBC on Monday that the international community was closing in on a decision about military intervention against Libya - with a no-fly zone one of the leading propositions. The countries that make up the G8 are: Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and Russia. Add Comments>>
