Indians take to the streets in international SlutWalk day

Newscast Media NEW DELHI, India -- In protest to a rise in sexual assault cases and the growing sense of insecurity, hundreds of Indians took to the streets of New Delhi for India's first "SlutWalk" on July 31. SlutWalks an international trend in protest against sexual violence, see women march dressed in skimpy clothing to challenge the idea that sexual assault is the responsibility of the victim. However, most of the women participating in the protest in New Delhi chose to wear loose T-shirts and trousers. "We did not want to unnecessarily dress up in something we are not comfortable in. In any case, no matter what a girl wears, salwar kameez or jeans, she is teased or assaulted". Protestors held signs with messages like "My short skirt has nothing to do with you!", "The way a woman dresses is not an invitation to sexual assault", "It's not about being a slut or not, it's about being human!". SlutWalk Sydney - Australia The most unsafe city for women in India is New Delhi according to Delhi Police annual report. (pop-up) Rape cases registered last year were 489, up from 459 in 2009. A total of 585 women were molested in 2010, compared to 528 in 2009. According to India Times, Slut Walk is also called as 'Besharmi Morcha', with both male and female protestors participating in it.
SlutWalk SOUTH AFRICA: South Africa will be having its rendition of SlutWalk in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. Both events will be happening on August 20, however, since it will be the middle of Ramadan, those dates might be pushed to September.
